Faith Formation: Sacraments

Sacraments

If we turn to the Catechism of the Catholic Church we will find a detailed description of each of the seven sacraments. We will find that the sacraments of Christian initiation are:

Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.  These lay at the foundation of every Christian life. After these, we will find two sacraments that are described as the sacraments of healing: Penance and the Anointing of the Sick. The final two sacraments of the Church are described as the sacraments of service and they are Matrimony and Holy Orders.

We at St. Frances Cabrini have experienced all of these within our walls with the exception of Holy Orders which is celebrated at the hands of the Bishop most usually at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville. As one would expect, there are certain requirements that an individual must meet in order to receive a particular sacrament and those requirements are as follows:

  • Baptism

Parents of a child younger than 6 years old  must be registered parishioners for at least 60 days before the baptismal date.  Parents must complete a Baptism Request Form (Click here for spanish form) either in the office or can be sent via email from sec@sfctn.org.  A birth certificate, and a letter of good standing from the godparents' parishes are required for the baptism can proceed. Baptism Prep Classes must be scheduled with the office. Prep classes can be requested from sec@sfctn.org.

Godparents/Padrinos must be at least 16 years old. At least one godparent must be a Catholic in good standing  (attends weekly mass, received all sacraments, and if married must have been married in a Catholic Church).  If one of the godparents is a non-Catholic, they will be considered a “witness” to the baptism.  At least one of the parents must give their permission for the child to be baptized.

The baptism of adults usually takes place within The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).  If interested in becoming Catholic, please contact the following: English - Gen Riley gen44@aol.com , Spanish - Maria Elena Hernandez are@sfctn.org

  • Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process in which adults become full, participating members of the Catholic Church. Participants, known as catechumens go through a process of studying the Gospel, nurturing their relationship with God, becoming familiar with the Catholic teachings and practices, professing their faith in Jesus and the Church, and receiving the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation.

    Who can join?

The Church extends an invitation to all who wish to become members of the Catholic faith. Those who go through the OCIA process fall under one of the following categories:

Someone who is of another faith and wishes to convert to Catholicism

An individual who was baptized in another Christian denomination and wishes to become a member of the Catholic faith

Someone who was baptized in the Catholic Church, but never received the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation

Our OCIA class meets on Sundays at 9:30am in Cabrini Hall. Feel free to join us on these days, or if you have questions, please contact the following: English - Gen Riley gen44@aol.com , Spanish - Maria Elena Hernandez are@sfctn.org

  • Marriage

Couples preparing for marriage are asked to contact the office at least six months prior to the proposed wedding date.  Please fill out this form and send it to sec@sfctn.org and we will contact you and confirm your wedding date! Wedding Registration Form

  • Anointing of the Sick

Any member of the Catholic faith and Catechumens can receive this sacrament which gives them an extra grace to assist them in their time of sickness or injury.  Examples of such situations are as follows:  admission to a hospital emergency room with a life threatening injury (i.e. car wreck, fall or other traumatic injury) or condition (i.e. stroke or heart attack), or if one has to undergo anesthesia for any type of surgery or procedure.

Contact the Pastor at pastor@sfctn.org or 931-922-0246.  He, or another priest, is the only minister of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
